A crane, besides standing on one leg, is also a symbol of long life, and this is how Crane-man got his name. Crane-man outlived all of his family and friends, and unable to work, he was forced to sell all of his possessions, and eventually he ran out of money and came to live under the bridge. Sadly, at the end of the story, Crane-man dies of a heart attack when he falls into the river next to the bridge and the freezing water kills him. Crane-man can only walk around with crutches, but he still had the upper body strength of a young man. Crane-man takes care of Tree-ear and loves him very much. He is a very brave, determined boy, and he proves himself throughout the story.Ĭrane-man is a kindly old man with a crippled and useless leg. When people talk around him, it seems like they do not even notice him! Tree-ear also has to scavenge for food and water and his hearing abilities enable him to know when there will be any parties or festivities. Crane-man named him Tree-ear because he was very good at eavesdropping and spying. Tree-ear does not have a real name because his parents never had a chance to give him one of his own. Tree-ear enjoys watching potter Min creating his beautiful celadon vases, and he dreams of becoming a masterful and experienced potter to craft amazing works of art of his own. Tree-ear and Crane-man became very good friends, and Tree-ear loves Crane-man very much. Discovering that his uncle had left the village before many years, the monk left Tree-ear in Crane-man’s care. A kindly monk brought baby Tree-ear to Ch’ulp’o from Songdo, to give Tree-ear to his uncle in the small seaside village. Tree-ear is a teenage orphan whose parents died of a very dangerous and contagious fever.
